How to Pick a Major

Picking a major is one of the hardest parts of the college process. What do I want to focus on? What makes me happy? What makes me money? Here's some things to consider and good questions to ask yourself.

What are your biggest priorities?

What do you want to do in the future? Do you want a creative job? A medical field? Want to help people? Want to invent things? Do you prefer working on your own or in a team?Think about where you might see yourself in the future and what would be fulfilling to you each day.

What are you good at?

Are you a math and science person? A literature person? Do you work well under pressure? Think about what you succeed at in school right now too! You would not want to go into a computer science major knowing you hate math, but also know you have time to grow and learn in the field.

How long do you want to be in school?

Some majors, like those in the medical field, will cause you to be in school for much longer than some of your counterparts, and cost much more. Are you willingly to get more than a Bachelor's degree for your major?

Consider alternatives! (double major, minors, changing your major)

Remember you have options! You can double major in two subjects you really enjoy or minor in something. You can even change your major during your time in school. Think about your major deeply, but remember it can change to fit the person you become!
